The UBC Department of Medicine provides research, teaching, and clinical services related to the nature, cause and prevention of adult diseases. The UBC Department is in the forefront of this field in Canada, representing 16 subspecialties and comprehensive training programs. Among these are internationally renowned programs in Neurology, Hematology/Bone Marrow Transplantation, Solid Organ Transplantation, Respiratory Sciences, Cardiovascular Sciences and Infectious Diseases (including the Centre of Excellence in HIV/AIDS). The Department has one of the most active research programs in the University. Faculty members located at the Point Grey campus are engaged in basic research and teaching. A cancer and hematology research group is located at the Terry Fox Laboratory in the B.C. Cancer Research Centre. Researchers are also located in the National Network Centres of Excellence (NCE) and the Centre for Molecular Medicine and Therapeutics (CMMT), the Jack Bell Centre and the MacDonald's Research Laboratory. The Department provides teaching to undergraduate students, medical students, and graduate students as well as postdoctoral training for specialist physicians and Ph.D. scientists. Clinical services are delivered by teams consisting of physicians, counselors, and support staff. Primary physicians and other specialist to any of nearly 300 faculty members with specialist credentials. The University of British Columbia is the oldest and largest in British Columbia. Established in 1915, it has an enrollment of more than 40,000 students. The Residency Training Program in the Department of Medicine is situated at various sites throughout the city including Vancouver General Hospital, St. Paul's Hospital & UBC Hospital. The program also operates at a number of allied institutions. In addition the training program makes use of teaching opportunities in non-tertiary care settings around the province. The Program offers a curriculum of education and research that stresses superb patient care as the key to excellent in academic medicine. Trainees proceed under the guidance and supervision of a faculty whose aims and outlook are progressive and innovative.
